Conceptual Discussions:
The director envisioned a gothic aesthetic inspired by the dark, impressionistic research I presented. She also wanted the laboratory to appear in silhouette, evoking a womb, and requested multiple levels for staging.
Design Goals:
I designed an imposing, angular, and asymmetrical structure to reflect the Creature's isolation. Scenic treatments (as seen on my draftings below) balanced realism with impressionistic textures, creating a recognizable world viewed through a dark, emotional lens.
Logistics:
The set needed to serve multiple locations without full scene changes. Flexible scenic elements and textured muslin created environments that remained visually compelling in both silhouette and front light.
Outcome:
The elevated platform strengthened the mountain scenes, while the adaptable stone wall allowed for quick, seamless transitions. Layered textures and shadows reinforced the gothic atmosphere, keeping audiences engaged and supporting the director's vision.
