Conceptual Discussions:
The director’s highest priority was minimizing scene changes, with everything needed for each setting already present onstage. She also requested multiple levels to support the blocking and create visual variety.
Design Goals:
I wanted to eliminate scene changes by identifying the primary areas needed and incorporating them into the design. Although the settings were separated throughout the space, I wanted them to feel connected as part of one cohesive world rather than as isolated locations.
Logistics:
The floor treatment and suspended scenic elements helped establish the world of the play while visually connecting the separate locations. These elements created a consistent scenic language that allowed each area to maintain its individual identity within the larger environment.
Outcome:
The design maintained the show’s pacing by eliminating scene transitions and allowing the action to flow seamlessly between locations. The multiple playing areas gave the director flexibility in staging, while the transitional spaces became an integral part of the blocking. The result was a cohesive scenic world that balanced distinct settings with a unified visual identity.
